Analyze the importance of Ashokan inscriptions for reconstructing Mauryan history. (Answer in 150 words)
Answer
Introduction
Ashokan inscriptions are the earliest extensive, near-contemporary royal records of the Mauryan age, issued across the subcontinent.
Historical Evidence
They provide evidence of Ashoka’s dhamma, administrative hierarchy, welfare measures, religious tolerance and relations with frontier peoples. Major Rock Edicts reveal imperial policy; Pillar Edicts illuminate governance; Minor Edicts establish personal conversion and Buddhist association. Their distribution maps the geographical reach of Mauryan authority. References to Greek rulers and contemporary regions assist chronology and external correlation.
Limitations
The edicts are normative royal proclamations rather than a complete narrative. Prakrit, Greek and Aramaic versions reflect regional audiences; translation and decipherment require caution. They say little about ordinary economic life, and archaeological and literary sources must supplement them.
