Analyze the major drivers of human-induced land-use changes in India and their geographical consequences. (Answer in 250 words)

Answer

Introduction

India’s land use is changing through demographic pressure, economic transformation and infrastructure expansion interacting with policy, markets and climate stress.

Drivers

Urbanisation converts agricultural and peri-urban land to housing, industry, roads and services. Population and income growth increase demand for food, settlements and construction minerals. Irrigation, dams, highways, railways, ports, mining, energy projects and industrial corridors alter forests and commons. Commercial crops, plantation expansion, overgrazing and groundwater-based agriculture reshape rural landscapes. Tourism, encroachment and fragmented governance intensify pressure on coasts, wetlands and hills.

Geographical Consequences

Deforestation and habitat fragmentation reduce biodiversity and ecosystem services. Wetland and floodplain conversion increases flooding; hill cutting and mining accelerate erosion, landslides and sedimentation. Urban sprawl raises heat islands, pollution and water stress. Intensive cultivation causes salinity, groundwater depletion and soil degradation, while coastal construction increases erosion and cyclone vulnerability. Land-use change also displaces tribal communities and affects food and livelihood security.

Way Forward

Regional plans, carrying-capacity assessments, ecological zoning, compact cities, public transport, commons governance, land restoration and rigorous environmental impact assessment can reconcile development with resilience.
