UPSC Previous Year Question | Mains GS1 | 2026
Analyze the role of satellite-based technologies in achieving climate-smart agriculture and food security in India. (Answer in 250 words)
Answer
Introduction
Satellite technologies provide synoptic, repeated and increasingly high-resolution information for making Indian agriculture productive, resilient and resource-efficient.
Applications
Multispectral imagery estimates crop area, health and stress through vegetation indices; radar works through cloud and supports crop and soil-moisture monitoring. Weather satellites improve rainfall, temperature and cyclone forecasts. These inputs aid sowing decisions, drought and flood assessment, pest surveillance, yield estimation, crop insurance and procurement planning. GIS-based watershed mapping supports irrigation, groundwater and land-use management.
Climate And Food Security
Early warnings enable resilient crop choices and targeted irrigation, reducing water, fertiliser and pesticide use. Yield forecasts strengthen buffer-stock and market planning; damage assessment can speed compensation. Satellite data also monitor forests, carbon, soil degradation and methane-relevant agriculture practices.
Constraints And Way Forward
Small fragmented farms, cloud cover, resolution limits, weak last-mile advisories, data costs and digital illiteracy restrict benefits. Open interoperable data, Indian-language mobile services, ground validation, farmer-producer organisations and integration with IMD, agriculture extension and insurance systems are essential.
