UPSC Previous Year Question | Mains GS1 | 2023

Comment on the resource potentials of the long coastline of India and highlight the status of natural hazard preparedness in these areas. (Answer in 250 words)

Answer

Introduction

India’s coastline is a strategic ecological and economic asset, but its dense population and exposure make preparedness central to sustainable development.

Analysis

Resource potential

  • Ports, shipping, shipbuilding and coastal industrial corridors support trade and employment.
  • Fisheries, aquaculture, seaweed, salt, offshore hydrocarbons and renewable wind, tidal and wave energy diversify livelihoods.
  • Mangroves, coral reefs, beaches and estuaries provide biodiversity, tourism, storm protection and blue-carbon services.

Hazard preparedness

  • India has improved cyclone forecasting, Doppler networks, evacuation protocols, shelters and community-based response through NDMA, IMD and state agencies.
  • Early warnings have reduced mortality, but exposure remains high because of informal settlements, weak last-mile communication and inadequate shelter maintenance.
  • Coastal erosion, storm surge, tsunamis, sea-level rise, salinity and industrial pollution require multi-hazard planning.

Way forward

Enforce CRZ norms, restore mangroves, use risk-sensitive zoning, strengthen resilient infrastructure and combine scientific warning with local knowledge and livelihood protection.
