UPSC Previous Year Question | Mains GS3 | 2016

Discuss India’s achievements in the field of Space Science and Technology. How the application of this technology has helped India in its socio-economic development? (Not more than 200 words)

Answer

Introduction

Science and technology is best assessed through its developmental, institutional and implementation dimensions, with equity and resilience as the governing tests.

Space-Capability Milestones

India built end-to-end capability through ISRO, from launch vehicles and satellites to ground systems. Milestones included INSAT communication, IRS remote sensing, PSLV reliability, GSLV development, navigation and missions such as Chandrayaan and Mars Orbiter Mission.

Developmental Applications

Space technology supports tele-education, telemedicine, weather forecasting, cyclone warnings, disaster mapping, navigation, telecommunications, resource surveys and agricultural monitoring. Remote sensing helps identify groundwater, crop conditions, forests, fisheries and urban expansion.

Socio-Economic Gains

These applications improve public-service targeting, connectivity, climate resilience and scientific capacity at comparatively low cost. Satellite communication bridges difficult terrain, while geospatial information strengthens planning for roads, irrigation, land records and coastal management.

Future Priorities

Future priorities are stronger domestic components, human spaceflight capability, secure navigation and better use of open geospatial data. Build state and local capacity, protect critical space assets, develop space regulation and commercial partnerships, and ensure that benefits reach remote communities rather than only advanced users.
