Discuss the geophysical characteristics of Circum-Pacific Zone. (150 words, 10 marks)

Answer

Introduction

The Circum-Pacific Zone, commonly called the Pacific Ring of Fire, is a horseshoe-shaped belt surrounding the Pacific Ocean and marked by exceptional tectonic activity.

Geophysical Features

  • Subduction: Oceanic Pacific, Nazca, Cocos and Philippine Sea plates descend beneath continental or oceanic plates along convergent boundaries.
  • Earthquakes: Megathrust, deep-focus and shallow earthquakes occur along trenches and transform faults, forming much of the circum-Pacific seismic belt.
  • Volcanoes: Magma generated above subducting slabs creates stratovolcanoes, volcanic arcs and explosive eruptions from the Andes to Japan and Indonesia.
  • Trenches: Mariana, Peru-Chile, Japan and Tonga-Kermadec trenches are associated with intense crustal recycling.
  • Mountain building: Andes, Cascades and island arcs demonstrate active orogeny and crustal deformation.
  • Tsunamis: Seafloor displacement during undersea earthquakes frequently generates destructive tsunamis.

Significance

The zone is also rich in geothermal energy and mineral deposits, but its dense settlements face recurring hazards requiring seismic construction, volcano monitoring and tsunami preparedness.
