Discuss the impact of Macaulay's Minute on colonial administration and education in India. (Answer in 150 words)

Answer

Introduction

Macaulay’s Minute of 1835 advocated state support for English education and Western knowledge, reshaping colonial intellectual policy.

Education

It redirected funds from Oriental learning towards English-medium instruction and European literature and science. The resulting educated middle class supplied lawyers, clerks, teachers and later nationalist leaders. Universities and print culture expanded subsequently, though access remained urban and socially restricted.

Administrative Impact

English became the language of higher administration, law and elite mobility, creating a common bureaucratic medium and strengthening centralised colonial governance. Education was also designed to produce intermediaries who would serve imperial institutions.

Critical Assessment

The policy marginalised Indian languages and indigenous institutions, generated cultural hierarchy and created a narrow educational pyramid. Yet its unintended consequence was the emergence of an articulate public sphere that criticised colonialism and demanded representative government.
