UPSC Previous Year Question | Mains GS1 | 2022
Discuss the natural resource potentials of ‘Deccan Trap’. (Answer in 150 words)
Answer
Introduction
The Deccan Trap is a vast Cretaceous–Eocene basaltic province formed by fissure eruptions. Its layered lava flows, black soils and escarpments create diverse resource opportunities.
Potential
Resource potential
- Black cotton soil: weathered basalt produces moisture-retentive regur, supporting cotton, soybean, pulses, sugarcane and oilseeds.
- Minerals: basalt and associated formations provide building stone, road metal, aggregates and clay; zeolites and amygdaloidal minerals have industrial value.
- Groundwater: joints, fractures, vesicles and weathered zones act as aquifers, though storage is discontinuous and over-exploitation is common.
- Water structures: step-like terrain and hard rock support reservoirs, tanks and waterfalls, while valleys offer agricultural niches.
- Renewables and tourism: elevated escarpments have solar and wind potential; mesas, caves and waterfalls support geotourism.
Constraints
Constraints
Hard-rock aquifers have uneven yields, black soils may suffer waterlogging, and quarrying can damage landscapes. Sustainable extraction, recharge structures and watershed management are essential.
