UPSC Previous Year Question | Mains GS1 | 2026

Evaluate the impact of globalization on Indian youths with reference to social, political, economic and cultural spheres. (Answer in 250 words)

Answer

Introduction

Globalisation has connected Indian youth to transnational markets, ideas and networks, producing opportunities and inequalities across social, political, economic and cultural life.

Social And Economic Effects

Digital connectivity, migration, international education and remote work expand knowledge, aspirations and peer networks. Services, start-ups, creative industries and global value chains create employment, but automation, gig precarity, skill mismatch and unequal English and digital access exclude many. Consumer culture and individual choice have widened, while mental-health pressure and comparison have also increased.

Political And Cultural Effects

Youth use social media for mobilisation, civic campaigns and transnational causes, improving voice but also enabling misinformation, polarisation and surveillance. Global music, cinema, fashion and food interact with regional traditions, producing hybrid identities; cultural homogenisation and commodification may coexist with renewed local assertion.

Balanced Assessment

Outcomes depend on education, regulation, social protection and media literacy. India should provide universal digital access, critical education, employable skills, labour rights, privacy safeguards and spaces for democratic participation. Global engagement should strengthen pluralism rather than erase linguistic and cultural diversity.
