Examine how the decline of traditional artisanal industry in colonial India crippled the rural economy. (250 words, 15 marks)

Answer

Introduction

Colonial rule transformed India from a major exporter of manufactured textiles and crafts into a supplier of raw materials and a market for British goods. The decline of artisans therefore damaged the wider rural economic system, not merely one occupation.

Mechanisms Of Decline

  • Machine-made British textiles entered India under favourable tariff conditions, while Indian exports faced restrictions and competition.
  • Company coercion, advances, monopolistic procurement and loss of courtly patronage weakened weavers and luxury crafts.
  • Railways and colonial trade networks expanded the reach of imported manufactures.

Rural Consequences

Displaced artisans returned to villages and crowded agriculture, increasing land pressure and disguised unemployment. Loss of complementary occupations reduced non-farm income, purchasing power and local demand. Peasants often borrowed for rent, revenue and consumption, deepening indebtedness.

Craft decline also weakened village interdependence: spinning, weaving, metalwork, leatherwork and carpentry had supplied tools, clothing and services. Imported goods created dependence, while raw-cotton exports exposed cultivators to price volatility.

Long Term Assessment

Deindustrialisation contributed to poverty, famines and structural underdevelopment, although some artisanal sectors adapted through regional specialisation. Colonial infrastructure served extraction rather than balanced industrialisation. Swadeshi, cooperative production, technical education and protection of handicrafts later became economic as well as nationalist demands.

The result was a cycle of low productivity and weak demand: rural households had fewer opportunities to diversify income, while the colonial economy gained raw materials without building broad-based manufacturing. This explains why artisanal decline became a structural rural crisis.
