UPSC Previous Year Question | Mains GS3 | 2022
Explain the mechanism and occurrence of cloudburst in the context of Indian subcontinent. Discuss two recent examples. (Answer in 150 words)
Answer
Introduction
A cloudburst is an exceptionally intense, localised rainfall event, conventionally associated with very high precipitation in a short duration over a small area. Orography and convection make the Himalayas particularly vulnerable.
Mechanism
Mechanism
- Strong surface heating and moisture inflow produce deep convective cumulonimbus clouds.
- Rapid uplift over Himalayan slopes, instability and convergence trap moist air, while updrafts hold large droplets and ice particles.
- When the cloud’s vertical support collapses, concentrated precipitation falls over a small catchment, triggering flash floods and debris flows.
Examples
Recent examples
- The 2013 Kedarnath disaster involved extreme rainfall, glacial-lake and river processes, causing catastrophic flooding.
- The 2022 Amarnath cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir caused flash floods and fatalities in a high-altitude pilgrimage zone.
Preparedness
Management
- Dense automatic rain gauges, nowcasting, slope and stream monitoring, hazard mapping, resilient pilgrim infrastructure, evacuation plans and local warnings can reduce loss.
