How did the colonial rule affect the tribals in India and what was the tribal response to the colonial oppression? (Answer in 250 words)

Answer

Introduction

Colonial rule disrupted tribal control over land, forests and labour by replacing customary institutions with revenue, commercial and administrative regimes.

Analysis

Colonial impact

  • Land settlements, moneylenders and courts enabled alienation of tribal land and spread of indebtedness.
  • Forest laws restricted shifting cultivation, grazing, hunting and collection of minor forest produce.
  • Commercial forestry, mines, plantations, railways and roads appropriated resources and displaced communities.
  • Forced or coerced labour, taxes and missionary-administrative interventions unsettled customary authority and culture.

Responses

  • Resistance combined defence of livelihood, restoration of customary rights and opposition to outsiders or dikus.
  • Santhal rebellion, Munda Ulgulan, Bhil and Kol uprisings used guerrilla action, attacks on symbols of authority and mobilisation through religious idioms.
  • Some movements sought autonomous rule and reform, while later participation in the national movement broadened political demands.

Although suppressed, these struggles forced limited protective laws and continue to inform claims under the Fifth Schedule, forest-rights legislation and self-governance.
