UPSC Previous Year Question | Mains GS1 | 2022
How will you explain that medieval Indian temple sculptures represent the social life of those days? (Answer in 150 words)
Answer
Introduction
Medieval temples were not only sacred spaces but also visual archives. Their sculptural programmes recorded institutions, occupations, gender roles, leisure and beliefs of contemporary society.
Social Evidence
Social life reflected in sculpture
- Occupations: artisans, musicians, dancers, hunters, traders, farmers and warriors reveal the economic division of labour.
- Domestic life: childbirth, grooming, marriage, motherhood and household interactions illuminate family institutions and gendered roles.
- Culture and leisure: musical instruments, dance poses, games and festivals show popular entertainment and performance traditions.
- Political order: royal processions, cavalry, elephants, courtly scenes and donor portraits reflect power and patronage.
- Belief systems: deities, apsaras, mithunas and narrative panels express religious pluralism, fertility symbols and moral imagination.
Interpretive Caution
Reading the evidence
These images are selective, shaped by patrons and religious conventions; they cannot be treated as a photographic census. Yet their combination with inscriptions, texts and archaeological evidence makes them invaluable for reconstructing lived experience.
