In what ways would the ongoing US-Iran Nuclear Pact Controversy affect the national interest of India? How should India respond to its situation? (15) (250 words)
Answer
Introduction
The US withdrawal from the JCPOA and renewed sanctions create economic, energy and strategic uncertainty for India, which maintains important ties with both Washington and Tehran.
Impact On India
- Sanctions can disrupt crude imports, payment channels, shipping insurance and the price stability of India’s energy basket.
- Chabahar port and associated connectivity to Afghanistan and Central Asia may face restrictions, weakening India’s regional access.
- Escalation could destabilise the Gulf, threaten Indian expatriates and raise remittance, evacuation and maritime-security risks.
- A nuclear crisis undermines non-proliferation and may intensify rivalry involving Israel, Saudi Arabia and Iran.
India should also coordinate with the European Union, Russia, Gulf partners and other stakeholders to preserve diplomatic space. Any waiver-dependent arrangement needs an exit plan, alternative logistics and financial resilience. Calibrated engagement is preferable to public confrontation or abrupt abandonment of legitimate connectivity interests.
Regular reporting to the legislature, public disclosure of reasons and accessible remedies would make the arrangement durable and reduce needless institutional confrontation.
Indian Response
- Engage all parties diplomatically and support verification, dialogue and a rules-based non-proliferation framework.
- Seek sanctions waivers and compliant payment mechanisms while diversifying energy sources, reserves and suppliers.
- Continue Chabahar through transparent, humanitarian and connectivity-focused arrangements, coordinating with partners.
- Protect nationals through contingency planning and maritime security; communicate India’s interests rather than appearing aligned with one bloc.
- Strategic autonomy should be pragmatic: preserve partnerships with the US and Iran while reducing vulnerability to either relationship.
