UPSC Previous Year Question | Mains GS1 | 2022
Troposphere is a very significant atmosphere layer that determines weather processes. How? (Answer in 250 words)
Answer
Introduction
The troposphere is the lowest atmospheric layer, extending from the surface to about 8 km at the poles and 16–18 km over the equator. Almost all weather occurs within it.
Why Weather Occurs
Why it controls weather
- It contains nearly all atmospheric water vapour, aerosols and much of the atmosphere’s mass, providing the material for clouds, rain and storms.
- It is heated mainly from the Earth’s surface. Temperature normally decreases with height, creating convection, instability and vertical mixing.
- Unequal heating produces pressure gradients, winds, jet streams and circulation cells; the Coriolis force organises their direction.
- Evaporation, condensation and latent-heat release power clouds, thunderstorms, cyclones and monsoon systems.
- Fronts and air masses interact in the troposphere, generating precipitation, fog, heat waves and cold waves.
Boundary And Human Link
Boundary and relevance
The tropopause limits vertical convection and influences the height and development of weather systems. Pollution, greenhouse gases and aerosols modify radiative balance, cloud formation and rainfall within the layer. Aviation, agriculture, disaster management and climate forecasting therefore depend on tropospheric observations.
Conclusion
Conclusion
Its moisture content, surface heating and dynamic circulation make the troposphere the principal arena in which atmospheric weather is produced and experienced.
