Tundra regions are ecologically fragile but economically important. Examine this statement critically. (Answer in 150 words)
Answer
Introduction
Tundra is a cold biome above the tree line, characterised by permafrost, short growing seasons, low vegetation and slow nutrient cycling.
Ecological Fragility
Low temperatures and limited productivity make recovery from disturbance extremely slow. Roads, mining and pipelines disrupt drainage and migration; thawing permafrost releases carbon and methane, damages infrastructure and changes hydrology. Arctic food webs and indigenous livelihoods are sensitive to warming and pollution.
Economic Importance
The region contains hydrocarbons, minerals, fisheries and strategic transport routes. Oil, gas, rare-earth and metal extraction generate revenue and employment; emerging sea routes may reduce shipping distance. Indigenous communities also derive food and cultural value from reindeer, fisheries and hunting.
Critical Balance
Economic activity must account for cumulative impacts, indigenous consent, spill risks and carbon lock-in. Protected areas, seasonal restrictions, low-impact technology and climate-resilient monitoring are essential because short-term gains may impose irreversible ecological costs.
