What are the main features of Vedic society and religion? Do you think some of the features are still prevailing in Indian society? (Answer in 250 words)

Answer

Introduction

Vedic society evolved from an early pastoral-tribal order into a more settled, stratified and agrarian society, reflected in its texts and institutions.

Analysis

Society

  • Early society was organised around kinship, jana, clan leadership and assemblies such as sabha and samiti; cattle were major wealth.
  • Later Vedic expansion into the Ganga-Yamuna plains encouraged agriculture, territorial kingdoms, taxation and hereditary varna hierarchy.
  • Family was patriarchal; women participated in ritual and learning in the early phase, but their public autonomy narrowed later.

Religion

  • Nature deities such as Indra, Agni, Varuna and Surya were invoked through yajna, with priests mediating ritual exchange.
  • Later thought stressed elaborate sacrifice, Brahmanical authority, karma, rebirth and the Upanishadic search for Brahman and Atman.

Contemporary traces

Patriarchal family norms, ritual centrality, social hierarchy, Sanskritic practices and ideas of karma remain visible, but constitutional equality, pluralism, scientific temper and democratic citizenship challenge their inherited forms. Continuity therefore coexists with reinterpretation and resistance.
