UPSC Previous Year Question | Mains GS3 | 2022
What is Integrated Farming System? How is it helpful to small and marginal farmers in India? (Answer in 250 words)
Answer
Introduction
An Integrated Farming System combines crops with complementary enterprises such as livestock, poultry, fisheries, horticulture, agroforestry and biogas so that outputs and wastes circulate within the farm.
Concept
Features
- Crop residues feed livestock; manure fertilises fields or produces biogas; pond water supports irrigation; and farm by-products reduce external input dependence.
- The system is locally adapted and may combine multiple enterprises rather than rely on monoculture.
Benefits
Benefits for small and marginal farmers
- Diversification spreads climatic, price and disease risk and provides income across seasons.
- Livestock, poultry, fish and vegetables provide nutrition and frequent cash flow from limited land.
- Recycling nutrients lowers fertiliser, feed and energy costs and improves soil organic matter.
- Water harvesting, agroforestry and mixed production improve resilience to drought and extreme weather.
- Family labour is used productively, while women may gain opportunities in dairy, poultry, processing and marketing.
Conditions
Requirements
- Extension, veterinary care, quality seed and feed, credit, insurance, local processing, market linkages and access to common water resources are essential.
- Design must consider labour burden and ecological carrying capacity; integration is not automatically profitable without planning.
Keywords
Enterprise diversification; nutrient recycling; circularity; risk spreading; agroforestry; smallholders; resilience.
