What is regional disparity? How does it differ from diversity? How serious is the issue of regional disparity in India? (Answer in 250 words)

Answer

Introduction

Introduction

Regional disparity is unequal levels of income, infrastructure, opportunity and human development across geographical areas; diversity is difference, not necessarily disadvantage.

Difference

Disparity versus diversity

  • Diversity refers to variation in language, culture, ecology, ethnicity, economy or lifestyle and can be a resource.
  • Disparity denotes unequal capabilities, access and outcomes, often produced by historical, institutional and spatial processes.
  • Diversity becomes unjust disparity when identity or location systematically limits rights, services and mobility.

Seriousness

Seriousness in India

  • Inter-state and intra-state gaps exist in per-capita income, industrialisation, health, learning, nutrition, digital access and jobs.
  • Coastal and metropolitan corridors often attract investment, while tribal, hill, desert, border and conflict-affected regions face connectivity and service deficits.
  • Disparity fuels migration, regional resentment, urban pressure and unequal political voice.

Way Forward

Way forward

Cooperative federalism, needs-based transfers, quality public services, infrastructure, decentralisation, local value chains and outcome monitoring can convert diversity into inclusive regional growth.
